FAQs

What is virgin coconut soy wax?

Virgin coconut soy waxes are gluten free, toxin free, paraben free, phthalate free and come from renewable sources. The entire blend (coconut wax, soy wax, and food-grade paraffin) utilizes only FDA approved waxes made in the USA. A small amount of food grade paraffin is added to the wax blend because we have found it to enhance the performance of the wax and helps give excellent scent. Scientific studies have proven paraffin wax to burn just as cleanly as soy, beeswax, or palm. And the highly refined food-grade nature of our paraffin puts it in the natural category.  After burning your candle you may notice changes to the wax characteristics, which is a natural phenomena that happens when the coconut soy wax heats up.

Why do we care about phthalate-free candles?

Phthalates are used to make plastics flexible, lubricate cosmetics, and other applications. In the past few years, researchers have linked phthalates to asthma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, breast cancer, obesity and type II diabetes, low IQ, neurodevelopmental issues, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorders, altered reproductive development and male fertility issues. Would you want to be breathing that in while enjoying your candle? We didn’t think so! We’ve worked really hard to procure high-quality materials that are only phthalate free.

How will my candle arrive?

  • Glass jar candles come packaged in a 100% cotton CICADA stamped bag, wrapped in eco-friendly recyclable wrap, and placed inside a recyclable kraft gift box. This box will be placed inside a recyclable shipping box filled with recyclable kraft honeycomb paper. We also utilize shredded cardboard from our studio materials as a base cushioning in your shipped box. This helps give another cycle of use to the cardboard we use.

  • During summer months, candles come packaged with cool-shield wrap to ensure that your candle arrives just as it was made.

First burn!

It is important when lighting your candle for the first time to let it burn until the wax melts to the outer edge of the vessel.  This will ensure you get the cleanest burn and best burn time with your candle. This can take 2-3 hours. Never burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time.

How to get the best burn and use out of your candle?

We thought you'd never ask. Here are some great tips to get the most use out of your candle:

  • Before lighting, please make sure to trim the wick to 0.2” (5 mm). You can use a wick trimmer or simply use your fingers to pinch off any black charred parts off of the wick. Only trim the wick when the candle is completely cooled.

  • To get the full burn time, always burn the candle until the wax pool has reached the edge of the vessel.

  • Always keep lit candles in sight while burning and away from anything flammable.

  • Never leave children or pets unattended near an open flame.

  • Lit candles are very hot. Never touch a candle or the vessel while it is lit.

  • Please allow sufficient time for candle to cool before handling.

My candle is all done! What do I do with my container?!

Like finishing a good book, it's so sad when a candle has run out of delicious smelling wax.  Before you decide what to do with the glass vessel, first you need to remove the wax and wick holder. While there are many tricks to doing this, the easiest we've found is just popping it in the freezer! Leave it in overnight, the wax will shrink, and in the morning it should pop right out. If you wash the glass vessel after, make sure to remove any wax from the sink as it will clog the sink.

All of our candles contain foil details in the labels (including our Golden Saguaro candle) and are not safe for dishwashers or microwaves after the wax has been removed.

So, what's next? You can check out our REBIRTH page for inspiration on how to re-use your glass vessels.
